The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (2005) Known Trivia

  • Georgie Henley's reaction to Mr. Tumnus at the lamppost is genuine. She had not seen her cast mate James McAvoy in his costume before the scene was filmed, so her screams and reaction were real. Georgie's first reaction to the snowy world of Narnia is also genuine - she was carried into the set blindfolded to make her first entrance, and her wide-eyed, delighted reactions to it all are entirely her own. 166 of 166 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • When the adults' swearing got out of hand on the set, Georgie Henley (Lucy) set up a swear bucket. James McAvoy was supposedly the worst offender. Even her teenager co-stars had to pay their toll, though, especially Skandar Keynes, accordingly to DVD's commentary. 84 of 84 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • According to the "Narnia" books, Professor Kirke (played by Jim Broadbent) is the elderly Digory Kirke. As a boy, Digory Kirke was the hero of 'The Magician's Nephew', the Narnia book that takes place chronologically before the events in 'The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe.' (This explains the Professor's willingness to believe that the Pevensie children have ventured to a magic land.) 'The Magician's Nephew' tells the story of the creation of Narnia, the coming of Jadis, the White Witch, the creation of the lamp post, and the creation of the wardrobe itself. Each design carved into the wardrobe signifies an important event that occurs in 'The Magician's Nephew.' 81 of 81 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • The wolves that destroyed the Beavers' home were mostly real animals with one or two CGI ones added in, although their tails had to be digitally removed and re-added. Their tails kept wagging while filming the scene, making them seem less vicious. 72 of 72 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • The role of Edmund was cast last of the four children. That helped making his character a bit detached to his siblings, since the other three actors had been together in a workshop for almost a month by the time Skandar got the part. Skandar absolutely hated being hugged by the other kids, so to ramp up on-screen antagonism, the director used every opportunity to have them do just that - even if the scene was finished! Skandar was absent during the scene where Edmund follows Lucy into the wardrobe, Anna Popplewell wore his costume from the waist down and did the scene for him. After his voice changed during filming, some of his voice track had to be re-looped by his sister. 60 of 60 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • Professor Kirke presents three choices to the other Pevensie children of what to think about Lucy's claim about Narnia: that she is lying, that she is mad, or that she is telling the truth. C.S. Lewis was a vocal advocate of Christianity, and in his book "Mere Christianity" presented three similar choices about Jesus' claim to be the Son of God: Liar, Lunatic, or Lord. This is known as his "Trilemma" argument, and is still often used by Christians today. 51 of 51 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • Before his death, C.S. Lewis sold the adaptation rights to the entire "Narnia" series. At that time, he absolutely despised television adaptations of his books, believing they were non-realistic, since actors had to wear suits to play non-human characters. It was only after seeing a demo reel of creatures created with computer graphics and the advancement of that technology that Lewis's stepson/co-producer Douglas Gresham gave the approval for a film adaptation. 47 of 47 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • During filming, William Moseley (Peter) kept accidentally hitting Georgie Henley (Lucy) with his sword handle and making her trip when he ran too quickly. 42 of 42 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • When Peter is talking to Aslan, Aslan says "Beaver also mentioned something about you turning him into a hat". That line was not originally in the movie. The smile you see is William Moseley smiling because a fly was buzzing around his head, which rendered the shot useless. 42 of 42 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • The movie was mostly shot in chronological order. The final scene where the Pevensie's fall out of the wardrobe was shot before all the outdoor shots so the kids would still be pale and look like they had in the beginning of the film. 39 of 39 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |

The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (2005) Plot: Four kids travel through a wardrobe to the land of Narnia and learn of their destiny to free it with the guidance of a mystical lion. Full summary »  »

Goofs: Continuity: After the climactic battle, as Aslan approaches Susan, Edmund, Peter, and Lucy; he stops, looks to his right, and breathes on a frozen figure. In the next shot from his rear where we can see the children, Aslan is looking to his left and there is nothing to his right.

The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (2005) Story: When the Pevensie family are evacuated out to the country, they are unaware of the adventure they will encounter. During a game of hide and seek, the youngest daughter, Lucy (Henley) discovers a wardrobe which transports her to the land of Narnia. Covered in snow, Narnia is full of weird and wonderful creatures, but is watched over by the evil White Witch, Jadis (Swinton). When all four Pevensie children end up through the wardrobe, they discover that it was meant to be, as two daughters of Eve and two sons of Adam must join with the mighty lion, Aslan (Neeson) to defeat the evil White Witch. Real Genius (1985) Known Trivia

  • In 2010, actor William Atherton told "The A.V. Club" that the popcorn used in the final scenes was treated with a flame-retardant chemical and so the crew went to great lengths to guard it against being eaten by birds, which would have died from the contaminant. Atherton also said that even with a machine in the studio dedicated to doing nothing but popping the popcorn, it took three months to pop it all. 18 of 18 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • The film was inspired and based loosely on actual events at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, California. 15 of 15 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • When Hollyfeld sends in a large number of entries to the Frito-Lay contest, he is mirroring the actions of Caltech students Steve Klein, Dave Novikoff and Barry Megdal, who, in 1974, used a similar strategy to win a McDonald's sweepstakes. Their entries came to roughly 1/5th of the total entries and won them a station wagon, $3,000 cash and $1,500 in food gift certificates. 12 of 12 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • The recurrence of the initials "DEI" in the movie is no accident. The truck that is used to transport the popcorn to Dr. Hathaway's new house has "Drain Experts Inc." emblazoned on its side. The company Chris interviews with at the beginning (and which funds Dr. Hathaway's show "Everything") is Darlington Electronic Instruments. The initials are rumored to have been inscribed by Caltech alumni at (among other places) the summit of Everest, on the moon and on many satellites and space probes manufactured at Jet Propulsion Labs (which sits just up the hill from Caltech in Pasadena). There has long been an unofficial contest to see who could place the letters DEI into the most prominent public view. Their placement in this film was with the full complicity of director Martha Coolidge and her Caltech advisor, David Marvit. 17 of 18 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • The "liquid nitrogen" coins have baffled viewers for many years, and are considered by many to be a goof. However the very first draft of the script shows that it wasn't an error. The thermos contains liquid nitrogen, which in turn contains a column of super-cooled CO2 (dry ice), which is what Chris uses in the vending machine. 11 of 11 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • The coordinates for Hathaway's house are given in the film as "34D 10M 15.21S NORTH, 119D 7M ..." Assuming the longitude is in the western hemisphere, that's somewhere in an area of farmlands east of Oxnard, California. The script gave a slightly different set of coordinates: "Thirty-four degrees, ten minutes, fifteen seconds North; one hundred eighteen degrees, nine minutes, three seconds West." The building at that location is a mortuary in Pasadena, a few blocks north of Caltech. 9 of 9 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • A scene where Chris floats outside his classroom suspended in a lounge chair attached to several balloons appeared in the preview version but not the release version. 8 of 8 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • When Chris and Mitch enter the plane, a background technician speaks "Final check: latitude 65 degrees, 19 minutes, longitude 44 degrees, 09 minutes." These coordinates lie in Russia just below the Arctic Circle near the White Sea, which was a key Soviet, now Russian Federation, naval and submarine base. 8 of 8 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • The math professor portrayed in the movie is played by Dr. Martin Gundersen, who is actually a physics professor at the University of Southern California. 8 of 8 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • In earlier versions of the script the Potassium-Cyanide laser, not the Bromide-Argon laser, used frozen fuel. This is why Chris tells the laser to "stay cool" before he goes off to take Hatheway's exam. 7 of 7 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |

Real Genius (1985) Plot: Teenage geniuses deal with their abilities while developing a laser. Full summary » |  »

Goofs: Errors made by characters (possibly deliberate errors by the filmmakers): Dr Hathaway is wearing a wedding ring even though he is single .

Real Genius (1985) Story: Mitch is one of the youngest students ever accepted to a university known for its programs for geniuses. He's partnered up with his roommate, science club legend Chris Knight, on a project to develop a high-powered laser. Together with their hyper-kinetic friends, they employ their intellects in the pursuit of bigger blasts, practical jokes, and a deeper understanding of what real genius is. When their final, functional laser is stolen by their teacher for a military weapon, they decide to get even. Written byLordship <lordship@juno.com>

Lolita (1997) Plot: A man marries his landlady so he can take advantage of her daughter. Full summary »  »

Goofs: Continuity: Lolita speaks to man in all white car while at gas station, but both before and after this scene, that car is black and white.

Lolita (1997) Story: Humbert Humbert, a British professor coming to the US to teach, rents a room in Charlotte Haze's house, but only after he sees her 14-year-old daughter, Dolores (Lolita), to whom he is immediately attracted. Though he hates the mother, he marries her as this is the only way to be close to the girl, who will prove to be too mature for her age. They start a journey together, trying to hide they're not just (step)father and daughter, throughout the country, being followed by someone whom Humbert first suspects to be from the police. The profound jealousy, and maybe some guilt from the forbidden love, seem slowly to drive the man emotionally labile. Written byLuis Canau <luis..canau@mail.EUnet.pt>
