Moana (2016) Known Trivia

  • The first Polynesian-themed Disney animated feature film since Lilo & Stitch (2002). 24 of 24 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • Moana will be the first full-length computer animated feature film to be written and directed by John Musker and Ron Clements, who were responsible for directing The Great Mouse Detective (1986), The Little Mermaid (1989), Aladdin (1992), Hercules (1997), Treasure Planet (2002), and The Princess and the Frog (2009); all of which were predominantly in hand-drawn animation. When it was initially rumored that Moana would be made in the hand-drawn/computer-animated technique "Meander" introduced with Disney's short film Paperman (2012), director John Musker said that it is "far too early to apply the Paperman (2012) hybrid technique to a feature. The Meander digital in-betweening interface still has a host of production issues (including color) that need to be perfected." 13 of 13 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • After directing "The Princess and the Frog", Musker and Clements started working on an adaptation of Terry Pratchett's Mort, but rights problems prevented them to continue with the project. To avoid similar problems, they pitched three new ideas, and in 2011 started developing the film based on an original idea. 12 of 12 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • Moana will be the fifth official Disney princess, that isn't of European descent, after Mulan, Jasmine, Pocahontas and Tiana. 17 of 18 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • In the October 20, 2014 interview with Huffington Post, director Ron Clements recalls the experience of visiting the islands of the South Pacific to gain artistic and authentic references for the film: "When we visited those islands, John [Musker] and I were especially interested in meeting people who lived on islands where they had grown up surrounded by an ocean. We wondered how that might effect your point-of-view. And we learned a lot. We learned all kinds of things that we didn't know. We learned how the sea and the land are one and the same. How these people think of the ocean as something that unites the islands, not something that separates them. And then we learned about the great migration and how the people of the Islands take great pride in the fact that their ancient ancestors invented this way of navigation called dead reckoning which involved studying the stars and the currents. And way before the European explorers or the Vikings, these people had this very, very incredibly advanced techniques of navigation." As Clements continued, "So many of these ideas in terms of respect for nature, respect for the ocean and the elements - all of these things - really had a huge influence on us and then began to make their way into this film's story," Ron continued. "Which is why Moana is now the most ambitious thing that John and I have ever attempted. There's definitely an epic aspect to this story. Not to mention huge opportunities for comedy and action and adventure. But at the same time, there's also a key relationship at the very heart of this story. An emotional core that - I think - is especially important with this film. But as it is with any of these things, you just hope that - in the end - you can get it right." 10 of 10 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • In the October 20, 2014 interview with Huffington Post, director John Musker said of the film's inspiration: "I grew up reading the novels of [Herman] Melville and [Joseph] Conrad. And the South Seas, the exotic world that a lot of their stories are set in, was extremely intriguing to me. Just looking at the art which comes out that corner of the globe - the carvings, the statuary, the sculpture - I thought that it all begged for this bigger-than-life treatment that you can only get with animation," John remembered. "So to expand on that idea, I then began reading up on the mythology of this area. Which is when I came across these incredible tales about Maui, who's one of the great cultural heroes of the South Pacific." It was, then, Musker felt that a film it could be found amid the promising potential. After when the potential adaptation of Terry Prachett's "Mort" got canned, he and longtime collaborator, director Ron Clements, pitched the project to WDAS CEO John Lasseter. "So Ron and I developed this very simple storyline. I love this arena. I love the bare bones of the story you've got. But this really begs for research. On the ground research. So we were forced, as it were, " Musker said jokingly, "to go to the South Seas two years ago. We've gone twice now. Two big research trips. And those trips have been revelatory and kind of life-changing in a way. In that it made us take our very simple outline and rework the whole thing." 9 of 9 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • Moana will be the first feature film produced by Osnat Shurer, who is currently the Vice President of Development at Walt Disney Animation Studios. In the October 20, 2014 Huffington Post interview, Shurer stated: "And much as I loved all the projects currently in development (WDAS has a very strong development slate and amazing filmmakers at the helm), I particularly resonated with 'Moana' for a number of reasons: Ron and John are awesome. This film deals with a surprising, exciting, and lesser known culture, which is right up my alley. It's a fantastic story. And Moana has this kick-ass, feisty, interesting female protagonist," Shurer explained. "So that when Ron and John asked if I would be their producer, and I said I would very much like to, John Lasseter, Ed Catmull, and Andrew Millstein thought it was a fantastic match." 7 of 7 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • Moana (2016) will be the most ambitious motion picture ever attempted by directors John Musker and Ron Clements, surpassing their previous films The Little Mermaid (1989) and Treasure Planet (2002). 12 of 14 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • Moana (2016) will be the first film directed by John Musker and Ron Clements to have to an oceanic setting since The Little Mermaid (1989) and the fourth to feature a princess since The Princess and the Frog (2009). 9 of 10 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • Moana (2016) will be a musical with a "Circle of Life" - style opening song from The Lion King (1994) depicting Moana's birth. She will team up with talking pig and rooster called Pua and Hei and a demigod called Maui 4 of 4 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |

Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988) Known Trivia

  • Since the movie was being made by Disney, Warner Brothers would only allow the use of their biggest toon stars, Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck, if they got an equal amount of screen time as Disney's biggest stars, Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck. Because of this, both sets of characters are always together in frame when on the screen. 160 of 160 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • The three ingredients of the dip which 'kills' toons, (turpentine, benzene and acetone) are all paint thinners which are used to remove animation from cels. 136 of 136 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • This movie marked the first time cartoon characters from both Walt Disney and Warner Brothers appeared together on screen. 132 of 132 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • Bob Hoskins said that, for two weeks after seeing the movie, his young son wouldn't talk to him. When finally asked why, his son said he couldn't believe his father would work with cartoon characters such as Bugs Bunny and not let him meet them. 279 of 282 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • The first test audience was comprised mostly of 18-19-year-olds, who hated it. After nearly the entire audience walked out of the screening, Robert Zemeckis, who had final cut, said he wasn't changing a thing. 118 of 118 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • With an estimated production budget of $70 million at the time of its release, Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988) was the most expensive film produced in the 1980s and had the longest on-screen credits for a film. 86 of 86 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • When Eddie takes Roger Rabbit into the back room at the bar where Dolores works to cut apart the hand-cuffs, the lamp from ceiling is bumped and swinging. Lots of extra work was needed to make the shadows match between the actual room shots and the animation for very little viewer benefit. Today, "Bump the Lamp" is a term used by many Disney employees to refer to going that extra mile on an effect just to make it a little more special, even though most viewers or guests will never notice it. 127 of 128 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • When the Special Edition DVD was released, Robert Zemeckis stated in an interview for a newspaper that Bill Murray was his and producer Steven Spielberg's original choice for the role of Eddie Valiant but neither could get in contact with him in time. Bill Murray states in interviews that when he read the interview he was in a public place at the time but he still screamed his lungs out, because he would have definitely accepted the role. 112 of 113 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • Pay close attention to Christopher Lloyd's performance as Judge Doom. In every shot where he's not wearing his shades, he never blinks. 111 of 112 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • Every frame of the movie which featured a mixture of animation and live action had to be printed up as a still photograph. An animator would then draw the particular illustration for that frame on tracing paper set on top of the photo. The outline drawing then had to be hand-colored. Once that was done, the drawing had to be composited back into the original frame using an optical printer. 68 of 68 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |

Goofs: Anachronisms: In the scene where the taxi is about to mount the road on the bridge, a modern day lamp post can be seen. While this design 'may' have been around in 1947, it would have been brand new, and unlikely to have been placed on an obscure road.

Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988) Plot: A toon hating detective is a cartoon rabbit's only hope to prove his innocence when he is accused of murder. Full summary »  »

The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (2005) Known Trivia

  • Georgie Henley's reaction to Mr. Tumnus at the lamppost is genuine. She had not seen her cast mate James McAvoy in his costume before the scene was filmed, so her screams and reaction were real. Georgie's first reaction to the snowy world of Narnia is also genuine - she was carried into the set blindfolded to make her first entrance, and her wide-eyed, delighted reactions to it all are entirely her own. 166 of 166 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • When the adults' swearing got out of hand on the set, Georgie Henley (Lucy) set up a swear bucket. James McAvoy was supposedly the worst offender. Even her teenager co-stars had to pay their toll, though, especially Skandar Keynes, accordingly to DVD's commentary. 84 of 84 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • According to the "Narnia" books, Professor Kirke (played by Jim Broadbent) is the elderly Digory Kirke. As a boy, Digory Kirke was the hero of 'The Magician's Nephew', the Narnia book that takes place chronologically before the events in 'The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe.' (This explains the Professor's willingness to believe that the Pevensie children have ventured to a magic land.) 'The Magician's Nephew' tells the story of the creation of Narnia, the coming of Jadis, the White Witch, the creation of the lamp post, and the creation of the wardrobe itself. Each design carved into the wardrobe signifies an important event that occurs in 'The Magician's Nephew.' 81 of 81 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • The wolves that destroyed the Beavers' home were mostly real animals with one or two CGI ones added in, although their tails had to be digitally removed and re-added. Their tails kept wagging while filming the scene, making them seem less vicious. 72 of 72 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • The role of Edmund was cast last of the four children. That helped making his character a bit detached to his siblings, since the other three actors had been together in a workshop for almost a month by the time Skandar got the part. Skandar absolutely hated being hugged by the other kids, so to ramp up on-screen antagonism, the director used every opportunity to have them do just that - even if the scene was finished! Skandar was absent during the scene where Edmund follows Lucy into the wardrobe, Anna Popplewell wore his costume from the waist down and did the scene for him. After his voice changed during filming, some of his voice track had to be re-looped by his sister. 60 of 60 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • Professor Kirke presents three choices to the other Pevensie children of what to think about Lucy's claim about Narnia: that she is lying, that she is mad, or that she is telling the truth. C.S. Lewis was a vocal advocate of Christianity, and in his book "Mere Christianity" presented three similar choices about Jesus' claim to be the Son of God: Liar, Lunatic, or Lord. This is known as his "Trilemma" argument, and is still often used by Christians today. 51 of 51 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • Before his death, C.S. Lewis sold the adaptation rights to the entire "Narnia" series. At that time, he absolutely despised television adaptations of his books, believing they were non-realistic, since actors had to wear suits to play non-human characters. It was only after seeing a demo reel of creatures created with computer graphics and the advancement of that technology that Lewis's stepson/co-producer Douglas Gresham gave the approval for a film adaptation. 47 of 47 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • During filming, William Moseley (Peter) kept accidentally hitting Georgie Henley (Lucy) with his sword handle and making her trip when he ran too quickly. 42 of 42 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • When Peter is talking to Aslan, Aslan says "Beaver also mentioned something about you turning him into a hat". That line was not originally in the movie. The smile you see is William Moseley smiling because a fly was buzzing around his head, which rendered the shot useless. 42 of 42 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • The movie was mostly shot in chronological order. The final scene where the Pevensie's fall out of the wardrobe was shot before all the outdoor shots so the kids would still be pale and look like they had in the beginning of the film. 39 of 39 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |

The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (2005) Plot: Four kids travel through a wardrobe to the land of Narnia and learn of their destiny to free it with the guidance of a mystical lion. Full summary »  »

Goofs: Continuity: After the climactic battle, as Aslan approaches Susan, Edmund, Peter, and Lucy; he stops, looks to his right, and breathes on a frozen figure. In the next shot from his rear where we can see the children, Aslan is looking to his left and there is nothing to his right.

The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (2005) Story: When the Pevensie family are evacuated out to the country, they are unaware of the adventure they will encounter. During a game of hide and seek, the youngest daughter, Lucy (Henley) discovers a wardrobe which transports her to the land of Narnia. Covered in snow, Narnia is full of weird and wonderful creatures, but is watched over by the evil White Witch, Jadis (Swinton). When all four Pevensie children end up through the wardrobe, they discover that it was meant to be, as two daughters of Eve and two sons of Adam must join with the mighty lion, Aslan (Neeson) to defeat the evil White Witch. • This was the last animated feature to be approved by Walt Disney and the studio's first animated feature to be entirely completed after his death. It should be noted, however, that Disney had spent time working on the story for The Rescuers (1977) (released seven years later) around the time The Jungle Book (1967) entered production. 35 of 35 found this interesting Interesting? • The character of Scat Cat was designed to be voiced by Louis Armstrong. The character's look was modeled after Armstrong - the way he played his trumpet, his roly-poly physique, right down to the prominent gap between his teeth. Balto (1995) Known Trivia

  • The real hero of the 1925 serum run was Togo. The 12-year-old husky led his sled dog team through 260 miles of blowing Alaskan blizzard to deliver emergency diphtheria serum to Nome. Balto received most of the fame because he led the final 55 miles. 18 of 18 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • After the serum run, Gunnar Kasaan, the musher, sold Balto on a nationwide tour. Afterward, the real Balto and his team were sold to a movie producer named Sol Lesser, who made a movie called Balto's Race to Nome (1925), eulogizing Balto. After that, the team was sold again and put on exhibit as a kind of curiosity show. The dogs were abused, neglected, and forgotten until a Cleveland businessman named George Kimbal, with the help of Cleveland school children, bought the six remaining dogs for the then astounding sum of $2,000, which they raised in two weeks. The dogs were brought to the Cleveland Zoo and lived out their lives in peace. When Balto died in 1933, he was stuffed and put on display in the Cleveland Museum of Natural History. 17 of 17 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • There are many differences between the movie and what really happened, such as: *The sled run to get the medicine was actually a relay, and Balto was only the leader of the last team to carry the medicine to Nome. The longest and most hazardous distance was traveled by the team led by Togo. *This film portrays Balto as a wolf hybrid. Balto was actually a purebred Siberian Husky. *Balto was never an outcast as shown by the film, but was instead born in a kennel owned by the famous musher Leonhard Seppala, where he grew up until he was deemed fit for pulling a sled, Seppala was also the owner of Togo, whom he personally used during the relay, Balto was instead used by one of his workers, Gunnar Kasaan. *The real Balto was neutered by Seppala when he was only a few months old, meaning the puppies he has in the sequels never came to be. 15 of 15 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • Kasaan staggered into Nome at 5:30 A.M. on February 2, 1925. His dogs were cold and exhausted, their feet torn and bloody. But the serum was delivered. Kasaan handed it to the only physician in Nome, Dr. Curtis Welch of the Public Health Service. And then he began to pull the ice splinters out of his dogs' feet. 14 of 14 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • After the mission's success, Balto and Gunnar Kasaan became celebrities. A statue of Balto, sculpted by Frederick Roth, was erected in New York City's Central Park on December 17, 1925, just 10 months after Balto's arrival in Nome. Balto himself was present for the monument's unveiling. The statue is located on the main path leading north from the Tisch Children's Zoo. In front of the statue a low-relief slate plaque depicts Balto's sled team, and bears the following inscription: "Dedicated to the indomitable spirit of the sled dogs that relayed antitoxin six hundred miles over rough ice, across treacherous waters, through Arctic blizzards from Nenana to the relief of stricken Nome in the Winter of 1925. Endurance . Fidelity . Intelligence" 11 of 11 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • Balto's two-tone gray fur colors and pattern were based on Tramp from Lady and the Tramp (1955). 11 of 11 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • When Jenna, Sylvie, and Dixie are walking in the street, a Balto look-alike can be seen behind them being pulled by its owner. This dog is Balto's old design. 10 of 10 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • Jenna's character design was based on Audrey Hepburn. 10 of 10 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • After gaining popularity through his success in the serum run, Balto was casted as the main character in a few of Alaska's silent films. This made him one of the first animal actors in film history. 10 of 10 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • The film's release was vastly overshadowed by the performance of Disney/Pixar's Toy Story (1995), and, at best, did modest box office. This led to the closure and disestablishment of Amblimation, but it quickly garnered a strong cult following and is now regarded as a classic. Strong video sales lead to the release of two sequels: Balto: Wolf Quest (2002) and Balto III: Wings of Change (2004). 10 of 10 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |

Goofs: Factual errors: The "Northern Lights" trick with the broken bottles is not possible.

The Wizard of Oz (1939) Known Trivia

  • Many of the Wicked Witch of the West's scenes were either trimmed or deleted entirely, as Margaret Hamilton's performance was thought too frightening for audiences. 194 of 195 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • When the wardrobe department was looking for a coat for Frank Morgan (Professor Marvel / The Wizard), they decided they wanted one that looked like it had once been elegant but had since "gone to seed." They visited a second-hand store and purchased an entire rack of coats, from which Morgan, the head of the wardrobe department, and director Victor Fleming chose one they felt gave off the perfect appearance of "shabby gentility." One day, while he was on set in the coat, Morgan idly turned out one of the pockets and discovered a label indicating that the coat had been made for L. Frank Baum. Mary Mayer, a unit publicist for the film, contacted the tailor and Baum's widow, who both verified that the coat had at one time been owned by the author of the original "Wizard of Oz" books. After the filming was completed, the coat was presented to Mrs. Baum. 361 of 367 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • Judy Garland had to wear a painful corset-style device around her torso so that she would appear younger and flat-chested. 130 of 131 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • The Scarecrow face makeup that Ray Bolger wore consisted, in part, of a rubber prosthetic with a woven pattern to suggest cloth. By the time the film was finished the prosthetic had left a pattern of lines on his face that took more than a year to vanish. 98 of 99 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • While filming the scene in which Dorothy slaps the Cowardly Lion, Judy Garland got the giggles so badly that they had to take a break in shooting. The director, Victor Fleming, took her aside, gave her a quick lecture, and then slapped her. She returned to the set and filmed the scene in one take. Fleming was afraid that this would damage his relationship with Garland and even told a co-worker he wished that someone would hit him because of how bad he felt, but Garland overheard the conversation and gave him a kiss on the nose to show that she bore no hard feelings. In the film she can still be seen to be stifling a smile between the lines "well, of course not" and "my, what a fuss you're making." 148 of 151 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • "Over the Rainbow" was nearly cut from the film; MGM felt that it made the Kansas sequence too long, as well as being too far over the heads of the children for whom it was intended. The studio also thought that it was degrading for Judy Garland to sing in a barnyard. A reprise of the song was cut: Dorothy sang it to remember Kansas while imprisoned in the Witch's castle. Judy Garland began to cry, along with the crew, because the song was so sad. 94 of 95 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • Margaret Hamilton, a lifelong fan of the Oz books, was ecstatic when she learned the producers were considering her for a part in the film. When she phoned her agent to find out what role she was up for, her agent simply replied, "The witch, who else?" 89 of 90 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • In 1898, Dorothy Louise Gage was born to the brother and sister-in-law of Maud Gage Baum, wife of author L. Frank Baum. When little Dorothy died exactly five months later, Maud was heartbroken. Baum was just finishing "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" and, to comfort his wife, named his heroine after Dorothy, changing her last name to Gale in his second book. Dorothy Gage was buried in Evergreen Memorial Cemetery in Bloomington, Illinois, where her grave was forgotten until 1996 when it was rediscovered. When Mickey Carroll, one of the last existing Munchkins from the movie, learned of the discovery, he was eager to replace her deteriorated grave marker with a new one created by his own monument company. The new stone was dedicated in 1997 and the children's section of the cemetery renamed the Dorothy L. Gage Memorial Garden, in the hope that bereaved families would be comforted in thinking of their lost children as being with Dorothy from "The Wizard of Oz." 154 of 158 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • The horses in Emerald City palace were colored with Jell-O crystals. The relevant scenes had to be shot quickly, before the horses started to lick it off. 132 of 135 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • Terry (Toto) was stepped on by one of the witch's guards, and had a double for two weeks. A second double was obtained, because it resembled Toto more closely. Judy Garland very much wanted to adopt Terry after the two spent so much time together shooting the film. Unfortunately, the owner of the dog wouldn't give her up, and Terry went on to a long career in films. She died in 1945 and was buried in her trainer's yard. 83 of 84 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
