The King's Speech (2010) Known Trivia

  • Lionel refuses to let Bertie smoke during their speech sessions, saying "sucking smoke into your lungs will kill you." King George VI, who often smoked 20-25 cigarettes a day, died from complications of lung cancer surgery on February 6, 1952, at age 56. 122 of 122 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • David Seidler stammered as a child, and heard King George VI's wartime speech as a child. As an adult, he wrote Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother (widow of George VI) and asked for permission to use the King's story to create a film. The Queen Mother asked him not to during her lifetime, saying the memories were too painful. Seidler respected her request. 163 of 165 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • The role of King George VI was written with Paul Bettany in mind. Bettany declined in order to spend more time with his family, and later admitted that he regretted his decision. Colin Firth was cast instead and received an Oscar for his performance. 80 of 80 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • At age 73, David Seidler became the oldest person to ever win the Best Original Screenplay Academy Award (Oscar) for this film. 69 of 69 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • The King's speech, as delivered in the movie, is only two-thirds of the original. The original speech has 407 words; the movie version has 269. Four sentences were deleted and four sentences were shortened. 56 of 56 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • Helena Bonham Carter, as Duchess of York and Queen, is seen talking to Winston Churchill (Timothy Spall). Her grandmother, Violet Bonham Carter, was a good friend of Winston Churchill's, and her great-grandfather was Prime Minister H.H. Asquith. 68 of 69 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • After the abdication, Edward and Wallis (alias Duke of Windsor and Duchess of Windsor) were genuinely surprised to learn that they were banned from the United Kingdom, never to return. It's generally believed the ban was primarily due to the new Queen Consort (alias Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother). She hated Wallis, blaming her for throwing King George VI into a job he wasn't prepared for and, later, contributing to his premature death due to the stress of being king. Queen Mary, Edward's mother, never reconciled with her son, and refused to attend his marriage to Wallis in France. Edward was allowed to return to England for the funerals of his brother "Bertie" and his mother. Both he and Wallis were allowed to be buried on a Royal Estate by special permission of Queen Elizabeth II. 82 of 84 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • While arguing about the coronation chair, the King mentions the Stone of Scone (pronounced "skoon"), also called the Stone of Destiny, underneath the chair. Scottish and British monarchs have been crowned over the stone for centuries, although it has probably not been really the same stone all this time, as a few "switcheroos" are believed to have taken place over the centuries. It was still in Westminster Abbey at the time shown, but was returned to Scotland in 1996 to appease anti-English feeling that the stone was rightfully Scotland's. It will temporarily return to Westminster Abbey for future coronations. 57 of 58 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • While talking about William Shakespeare, one of Logue's sons mentions 'the Scottish play'. That play is 'Macbeth'; according to a widely-held superstition, the play is cursed, and saying its title aloud brings bad luck. 55 of 56 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • While preparing the film, the production knew that having some key cast would help the movie get made. They convinced someone who lived near actor Geoffrey Rush to put the script in his letterbox, against industry practice. It included a note apologizing for the unsolicited delivery, and explained that they were desperate for him to know the script existed. Rush read the script and agreed to do the film. 69 of 71 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |

Goofs: Anachronisms: The Wembley Stadium scene includes the famous twin towers on the far side of the field. In real life, the towers were on the same side as the royal box. In the 1920s, the far side had open terracing.

The King's Speech (2010) Story: Tells the story of the man who became King George VI, the father of Queen Elizabeth II. After his brother abdicates, George ('Bertie') reluctantly assumes the throne. Plagued by a dreaded stammer and considered unfit to be king, Bertie engages the help of an unorthodox speech therapist named Lionel Logue. Through a set of unexpected techniques, and as a result of an unlikely friendship, Bertie is able to find his voice and boldly lead the country through war. Written byAnonymous

Robin Hood (2010) Plot: In 13th century England, Robin and his band of marauders confront corruption in a local village and lead an uprising against the crown that will forever alter the balance of world power. Full summary »  »

Goofs: Incorrectly regarded as goofs: Several characters speak of "seed corn." Many viewers interpret this as American maize which wasn't introduced to England until the 15th or 16th century. However, the word "corn" in 1199 England was used for many different cereal grains (wheat, rye, oats, etc.), not the corn-on the-cob we think of today.

Robin Hood (2010) Story: Birth of a legend. Following King Richard's death in France, archer Robin Longstride, along with Will Scarlett, Alan-a-Dale and Little John, returns to England. They encounter the dying Robert of Locksley, whose party was ambushed by treacherous Godfrey, who hopes to facilitate a French invasion of England. Robin promises the dying knight he will return his sword to his father Walter in Nottingham. Here Walter encourages him to impersonate the dead man to prevent his land being confiscated by the crown, and he finds himself with Marian, a ready-made wife. Hoping to stir baronial opposition to weak King John and allow an easy French take-over, Godfrey worms his way into the king's service as Earl Marshal of England and brutally invades towns under the pretext of collecting Royal taxes. Can Robin navigate the politics of barons, royals, traitors, and the French? Written bydon @ minifie-1

Balto (1995) Known Trivia

  • The real hero of the 1925 serum run was Togo. The 12-year-old husky led his sled dog team through 260 miles of blowing Alaskan blizzard to deliver emergency diphtheria serum to Nome. Balto received most of the fame because he led the final 55 miles. 18 of 18 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • After the serum run, Gunnar Kasaan, the musher, sold Balto on a nationwide tour. Afterward, the real Balto and his team were sold to a movie producer named Sol Lesser, who made a movie called Balto's Race to Nome (1925), eulogizing Balto. After that, the team was sold again and put on exhibit as a kind of curiosity show. The dogs were abused, neglected, and forgotten until a Cleveland businessman named George Kimbal, with the help of Cleveland school children, bought the six remaining dogs for the then astounding sum of $2,000, which they raised in two weeks. The dogs were brought to the Cleveland Zoo and lived out their lives in peace. When Balto died in 1933, he was stuffed and put on display in the Cleveland Museum of Natural History. 17 of 17 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • There are many differences between the movie and what really happened, such as: *The sled run to get the medicine was actually a relay, and Balto was only the leader of the last team to carry the medicine to Nome. The longest and most hazardous distance was traveled by the team led by Togo. *This film portrays Balto as a wolf hybrid. Balto was actually a purebred Siberian Husky. *Balto was never an outcast as shown by the film, but was instead born in a kennel owned by the famous musher Leonhard Seppala, where he grew up until he was deemed fit for pulling a sled, Seppala was also the owner of Togo, whom he personally used during the relay, Balto was instead used by one of his workers, Gunnar Kasaan. *The real Balto was neutered by Seppala when he was only a few months old, meaning the puppies he has in the sequels never came to be. 15 of 15 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • Kasaan staggered into Nome at 5:30 A.M. on February 2, 1925. His dogs were cold and exhausted, their feet torn and bloody. But the serum was delivered. Kasaan handed it to the only physician in Nome, Dr. Curtis Welch of the Public Health Service. And then he began to pull the ice splinters out of his dogs' feet. 14 of 14 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • After the mission's success, Balto and Gunnar Kasaan became celebrities. A statue of Balto, sculpted by Frederick Roth, was erected in New York City's Central Park on December 17, 1925, just 10 months after Balto's arrival in Nome. Balto himself was present for the monument's unveiling. The statue is located on the main path leading north from the Tisch Children's Zoo. In front of the statue a low-relief slate plaque depicts Balto's sled team, and bears the following inscription: "Dedicated to the indomitable spirit of the sled dogs that relayed antitoxin six hundred miles over rough ice, across treacherous waters, through Arctic blizzards from Nenana to the relief of stricken Nome in the Winter of 1925. Endurance . Fidelity . Intelligence" 11 of 11 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • Balto's two-tone gray fur colors and pattern were based on Tramp from Lady and the Tramp (1955). 11 of 11 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • When Jenna, Sylvie, and Dixie are walking in the street, a Balto look-alike can be seen behind them being pulled by its owner. This dog is Balto's old design. 10 of 10 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • Jenna's character design was based on Audrey Hepburn. 10 of 10 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • After gaining popularity through his success in the serum run, Balto was casted as the main character in a few of Alaska's silent films. This made him one of the first animal actors in film history. 10 of 10 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • The film's release was vastly overshadowed by the performance of Disney/Pixar's Toy Story (1995), and, at best, did modest box office. This led to the closure and disestablishment of Amblimation, but it quickly garnered a strong cult following and is now regarded as a classic. Strong video sales lead to the release of two sequels: Balto: Wolf Quest (2002) and Balto III: Wings of Change (2004). 10 of 10 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |

Goofs: Factual errors: The "Northern Lights" trick with the broken bottles is not possible.

Balto (1995) Plot: An outcast half-wolf risks his life to prevent a deadly epidemic from ravaging Nome, Alaska. Full summary »  »

He leaves the closet and New York, opens a camera shop that becomes the salon for San Francisco's growing gay community, and organizes gays' purchasing power to build political alliances. He runs for office with lover Scott Smith as his campaign manager. Victory finally comes on the same day Dan White wins in the city's conservative district. The 13th Warrior (1999) Known Trivia

  • The film omits an explanation of who the "mist monsters" actually are. In the novel, author Michael Crichton reveals they were the descendants of the Neanderthals. 33 of 33 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • The Historic Ahmed Ibn Fadlan traveled as an emissary to the land of the Volga Bulgars to convert them to Islam. And on his way he encountered Turks in Central Asia and Russian and Varangians (Volga Vikings). He returned in 923 and no record after this date refers to him. 32 of 32 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • One of the Viking ships used in the movie is now to be found in the Norwegian pavilion in the EPCOT-center, Walt Disney World, where it is used as a playground for kids. The Disney-company is also the owner of Touchstone Pictures that made the movie. 20 of 20 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • Since Michael Crichton published his novel "Eaters of the Dead" in 1976, the basis of this film, it has become regarded as one of the most notorious hoaxes in Librarianship Circles. The Ahmad Tusi Manuscript that Crichton referenced in his bibliography as being the source of this story, is completely made up. The name of the translator Fraus Dolus is in fact two Latin words meaning both 'hoax' and 'fraud'. The University of Oslo, where this manuscript is supposed to be kept, have (since the book was published), on an annual basis had to send out letters telling enquirers that they have been the victim of a hoax. 38 of 40 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • In accordance with the book, John McTiernan's version of the Wendol's mother was an old woman, which was filmed with veteran actress Susan Willis. When Michael Crichton took over and did the reshoots, it was decided that brutally killing off an old lady did not reflect very well on the heroes. Crichton decided after the fact to make her younger, sleeker and tougher. In the final released film, Wendol's mother is played by actress Kristen Cloke (uncredited), but the final credits still list Susan Willis as the Wendol's mother (although she is nowhere to be seen in the final cut). 19 of 19 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • Adapting "Beowulf" for his novel and then for this movie, Michael Crichton changed some of the original names for ones that sounded similar: Beowulf is here named Buliwyf, Hygelac becomes Hyglak, the Grendel transformed into the Wendol, etc. 17 of 17 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • Graeme Revell had composed a complete original score when the movie was slated to be released as "Eaters of the Dead" in 1998. But after the film was deemed unwatchable during test screenings, Michael Crichton took over the project and rejected Revell's original score and brought in Jerry Goldsmith to rescore the film, renamed "The 13th Warrior." 17 of 17 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • Omar Sharif was so disappointed by the finished film that he took a temporary retirement from acting. 32 of 34 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • Although rumors persist that 'The 13th Warrior' was one of the most expensive movie flops ever with a budget of $160m (the figure given on the-numbers.com for its combined production and marketing costs), the producers claimed that the actual cost of the film before marketing was $90m. In the U.S. The 13th Warrior grossed $32,698,900 and only $61,702,600 worldwide. 16 of 16 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • The disparate armor worn by the Vikings can be explained by the Norse tradition of taking the armor of a vanquished foe. It was also a display of status in Norse society..the nicer the armor the higher the position hence Buliwyf's ornate set and why Halga appears to have the helmet of a Roman gladiator. 15 of 15 found this interesting Interesting? The 13th Warrior (1999) Story: In AD 922, Arab courtier Ahmad Ibn Fadlan accompanies a party of Vikings to the barbaric North. Ibn Fadlan is appalled by the Vikings customs-- their wanton sexuality, their disregard for cleanliness, their cold-blooded human sacrifices. And then he learns the horrifying truth: he has been enlisted to combat a terror that slaughters the Vikings and devours their flesh. Written by<surge@discoverynet.com>

Goofs: Continuity: In the scene where the warriors are outside talking in a circle (just after they have met with the king), you can see one of the warriors with a war hammer resting across his shoulders. The scene shows the hammer end up and the spike end down, but in the next shot the ends are reversed, and then back again.
