Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (1991) Known Trivia

  • Cary Elwes was offered the role of Robin Hood and turned it down because he thought the plot was too contrived. He did however portray the character in the Mel Brooks spoof Robin Hood: Men in Tights (1993). 52 of 52 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • Alan Rickman turned down the role of the Sheriff twice before he was told he could more or less have carte blanche with his interpretation of the character. 45 of 45 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • 'Christian Slater' ad-libbed Will Scarlett's line of "Fuck me, he cleared it!", after Robin and Azeem are catapulted over the castle wall. Director 'Kevin Reynolds (I)' kept it in the film because it was funny, despite the historical inaccuracy. 54 of 55 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • Rumor has it that Kevin Costner wanted to use an English accent, but director Kevin Reynolds didn't want him to. Supposedly, Costner would affect the accent when he was arguing with Reynolds, but not when they were in agreement. Costner claims that he was initially asked to use an accent and hired a dialect coach, but this was stopped (and the coach was fired) when he did it poorly. 30 of 30 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • Most of the songs the characters sing or hum within the film are actual Medieval melodies. For example, the song Friar Tuck sings is set to the tune of a song called Bacche Bene Venies, from the 13th century Codex Buranus. 23 of 23 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • "Sadiq", the name that Azeem calls Robin, means "friend" in Arabic. 21 of 21 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • The initial trumpet flourish of the title score would later become production company Morgan Creek's theme music. 21 of 21 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • Sean Connery was first offered the cameo of Lord Locksley (Brian Blessed) but passed as he felt he had been playing a lot of fathers in recent years. 20 of 20 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • The producers, one of them being director Kevin Reynolds' longtime friend, Kevin Costner, took over the editing of the film, going to the extent of physically locking the original editor Peter Boyle out of the editing suite. However they were contractually obliged, under Directors' Guild rules, to show their cut to Reynolds. He was less than impressed with what they'd done to his film. 25 of 26 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |

The King's Speech (2010) Known Trivia

  • Lionel refuses to let Bertie smoke during their speech sessions, saying "sucking smoke into your lungs will kill you." King George VI, who often smoked 20-25 cigarettes a day, died from complications of lung cancer surgery on February 6, 1952, at age 56. 122 of 122 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • David Seidler stammered as a child, and heard King George VI's wartime speech as a child. As an adult, he wrote Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother (widow of George VI) and asked for permission to use the King's story to create a film. The Queen Mother asked him not to during her lifetime, saying the memories were too painful. Seidler respected her request. 163 of 165 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • The role of King George VI was written with Paul Bettany in mind. Bettany declined in order to spend more time with his family, and later admitted that he regretted his decision. Colin Firth was cast instead and received an Oscar for his performance. 80 of 80 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • At age 73, David Seidler became the oldest person to ever win the Best Original Screenplay Academy Award (Oscar) for this film. 69 of 69 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • The King's speech, as delivered in the movie, is only two-thirds of the original. The original speech has 407 words; the movie version has 269. Four sentences were deleted and four sentences were shortened. 56 of 56 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • Helena Bonham Carter, as Duchess of York and Queen, is seen talking to Winston Churchill (Timothy Spall). Her grandmother, Violet Bonham Carter, was a good friend of Winston Churchill's, and her great-grandfather was Prime Minister H.H. Asquith. 68 of 69 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • After the abdication, Edward and Wallis (alias Duke of Windsor and Duchess of Windsor) were genuinely surprised to learn that they were banned from the United Kingdom, never to return. It's generally believed the ban was primarily due to the new Queen Consort (alias Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother). She hated Wallis, blaming her for throwing King George VI into a job he wasn't prepared for and, later, contributing to his premature death due to the stress of being king. Queen Mary, Edward's mother, never reconciled with her son, and refused to attend his marriage to Wallis in France. Edward was allowed to return to England for the funerals of his brother "Bertie" and his mother. Both he and Wallis were allowed to be buried on a Royal Estate by special permission of Queen Elizabeth II. 82 of 84 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • While arguing about the coronation chair, the King mentions the Stone of Scone (pronounced "skoon"), also called the Stone of Destiny, underneath the chair. Scottish and British monarchs have been crowned over the stone for centuries, although it has probably not been really the same stone all this time, as a few "switcheroos" are believed to have taken place over the centuries. It was still in Westminster Abbey at the time shown, but was returned to Scotland in 1996 to appease anti-English feeling that the stone was rightfully Scotland's. It will temporarily return to Westminster Abbey for future coronations. 57 of 58 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • While talking about William Shakespeare, one of Logue's sons mentions 'the Scottish play'. That play is 'Macbeth'; according to a widely-held superstition, the play is cursed, and saying its title aloud brings bad luck. 55 of 56 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • While preparing the film, the production knew that having some key cast would help the movie get made. They convinced someone who lived near actor Geoffrey Rush to put the script in his letterbox, against industry practice. It included a note apologizing for the unsolicited delivery, and explained that they were desperate for him to know the script existed. Rush read the script and agreed to do the film. 69 of 71 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |

Goofs: Anachronisms: The Wembley Stadium scene includes the famous twin towers on the far side of the field. In real life, the towers were on the same side as the royal box. In the 1920s, the far side had open terracing.

The King's Speech (2010) Story: Tells the story of the man who became King George VI, the father of Queen Elizabeth II. After his brother abdicates, George ('Bertie') reluctantly assumes the throne. Plagued by a dreaded stammer and considered unfit to be king, Bertie engages the help of an unorthodox speech therapist named Lionel Logue. Through a set of unexpected techniques, and as a result of an unlikely friendship, Bertie is able to find his voice and boldly lead the country through war. Written byAnonymous

Robin Hood (2010) Plot: In 13th century England, Robin and his band of marauders confront corruption in a local village and lead an uprising against the crown that will forever alter the balance of world power. Full summary »  »

Goofs: Incorrectly regarded as goofs: Several characters speak of "seed corn." Many viewers interpret this as American maize which wasn't introduced to England until the 15th or 16th century. However, the word "corn" in 1199 England was used for many different cereal grains (wheat, rye, oats, etc.), not the corn-on the-cob we think of today.

Robin Hood (2010) Story: Birth of a legend. Following King Richard's death in France, archer Robin Longstride, along with Will Scarlett, Alan-a-Dale and Little John, returns to England. They encounter the dying Robert of Locksley, whose party was ambushed by treacherous Godfrey, who hopes to facilitate a French invasion of England. Robin promises the dying knight he will return his sword to his father Walter in Nottingham. Here Walter encourages him to impersonate the dead man to prevent his land being confiscated by the crown, and he finds himself with Marian, a ready-made wife. Hoping to stir baronial opposition to weak King John and allow an easy French take-over, Godfrey worms his way into the king's service as Earl Marshal of England and brutally invades towns under the pretext of collecting Royal taxes. Can Robin navigate the politics of barons, royals, traitors, and the French? Written bydon @ minifie-1
