Midnight Express (1978) Known Trivia

  • In 2004, screen-writer Oliver Stone apologized for the portrayal of Turkey, Turkish prisons and the Turkish people in the movie. 31 of 32 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • The Turkish authorities still have a warrant out for the arrest for Billy Hayes who is technically a prison escapee. 17 of 17 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • The scene in which Brad Davis' character bites out the tongue of a fellow inmate upset the crew so much that they all walked off the set, leaving Alan Parker to shoot it with his two actors. For the scene, Davis carried a pig's tongue around in his mouth. 22 of 23 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • In an attempt to really get into character, John Hurt stopped bathing for most of the 53-day schedule and reeked so badly in time, most of his colleagues avoided being close to him. 22 of 23 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • First movie to win an Oscar for "Best Original Score" featuring a totally synthesized music score. 20 of 21 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • Although the movie is based on a true story, it has been indicated by Billy Hayes himself 20 years after its release, that what is presented in the movie is a very exaggerated version of what happened to him in the prison in Istanbul, Turkey. 24 of 26 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • Banned (and never released theatrically) in Turkey, until 1992 when the private TV channel HBB broadcast it. 16 of 17 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • Turkish government officials greatly resented the portrayal of their country in the movie, and made this known to the media in general after the film's release. 14 of 15 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • The large group of Turkish police and soldiers at the Istanbul airport, which are on hand to search each passenger before they board the jet, was another attempt by the film makers to portray Turkey as an authoritarian police state. But in reality, this real-life event that Billy Hayes encountered of a thorough search of each passenger was a reaction to the PLO hijacking (and subsequent destruction) of four passenger jets in Europe just four weeks prior to the event portrayed at the beginning of the film (October 6, 1970). There are two somewhat oblique references to this event early in the film: a headline on the paper that Susan is reading on the bus that takes them to the plane ("Nixon Outraged at Palestinian Hijackers"), and again in the car after his arrest when Tex says "You decided to fly at a bad time... guerrillas all over the place, blowing' up planes... 4 planes in 4 days". 14 of 15 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • The title "Midnight Express" is cell-block prison slang language for a jail break-out. 14 of 15 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |

Goofs: Anachronisms: The "fez" hat worn by several Turkish men in the movie has been extremely rare in Turkey since 1925 when it was abolished by Kemal Ataturk (the leader and founder of the Republic of Turkey) in an attempt to "westernize" the country.

Midnight Express (1978) Plot: The true story of Billy Hayes, an American college student who is caught smuggling drugs out of Turkey and thrown into prison. Full summary »  »

Midnight Express (1978) Story: On October 6, 1970 while boarding an international flight out of Istanbul Airport, American Billy Hayes is caught attempting to smuggle 2 kilos of hashish out of the country, the drugs strapped to his body. He is told that he will be released if he cooperates with the authorities in identifying the person who actually sold him the hash. Billy's troubles really begin when after that assistance, he makes a run for it and is recaptured. He is initially sentenced to just over four years for possession, with no time for the more harsh crime of smuggling. The prison environment is inhospitable in every sense, with a sadistic prison guard named Hamidou ruling the prison, he who relishes the mental and physical torture he inflicts on the prisoners for whatever reason. Told to trust no one, Billy does befriend a few of the other inmates, namely fellow American Jimmy Booth (in for stealing two candlesticks from a mosque), a Swede named Erich, and one of the senior prisoners having already ... Real Genius (1985) Known Trivia

  • In 2010, actor William Atherton told "The A.V. Club" that the popcorn used in the final scenes was treated with a flame-retardant chemical and so the crew went to great lengths to guard it against being eaten by birds, which would have died from the contaminant. Atherton also said that even with a machine in the studio dedicated to doing nothing but popping the popcorn, it took three months to pop it all. 18 of 18 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • The film was inspired and based loosely on actual events at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, California. 15 of 15 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • When Hollyfeld sends in a large number of entries to the Frito-Lay contest, he is mirroring the actions of Caltech students Steve Klein, Dave Novikoff and Barry Megdal, who, in 1974, used a similar strategy to win a McDonald's sweepstakes. Their entries came to roughly 1/5th of the total entries and won them a station wagon, $3,000 cash and $1,500 in food gift certificates. 12 of 12 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • The recurrence of the initials "DEI" in the movie is no accident. The truck that is used to transport the popcorn to Dr. Hathaway's new house has "Drain Experts Inc." emblazoned on its side. The company Chris interviews with at the beginning (and which funds Dr. Hathaway's show "Everything") is Darlington Electronic Instruments. The initials are rumored to have been inscribed by Caltech alumni at (among other places) the summit of Everest, on the moon and on many satellites and space probes manufactured at Jet Propulsion Labs (which sits just up the hill from Caltech in Pasadena). There has long been an unofficial contest to see who could place the letters DEI into the most prominent public view. Their placement in this film was with the full complicity of director Martha Coolidge and her Caltech advisor, David Marvit. 17 of 18 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • The "liquid nitrogen" coins have baffled viewers for many years, and are considered by many to be a goof. However the very first draft of the script shows that it wasn't an error. The thermos contains liquid nitrogen, which in turn contains a column of super-cooled CO2 (dry ice), which is what Chris uses in the vending machine. 11 of 11 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • The coordinates for Hathaway's house are given in the film as "34D 10M 15.21S NORTH, 119D 7M ..." Assuming the longitude is in the western hemisphere, that's somewhere in an area of farmlands east of Oxnard, California. The script gave a slightly different set of coordinates: "Thirty-four degrees, ten minutes, fifteen seconds North; one hundred eighteen degrees, nine minutes, three seconds West." The building at that location is a mortuary in Pasadena, a few blocks north of Caltech. 9 of 9 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • A scene where Chris floats outside his classroom suspended in a lounge chair attached to several balloons appeared in the preview version but not the release version. 8 of 8 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • When Chris and Mitch enter the plane, a background technician speaks "Final check: latitude 65 degrees, 19 minutes, longitude 44 degrees, 09 minutes." These coordinates lie in Russia just below the Arctic Circle near the White Sea, which was a key Soviet, now Russian Federation, naval and submarine base. 8 of 8 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • The math professor portrayed in the movie is played by Dr. Martin Gundersen, who is actually a physics professor at the University of Southern California. 8 of 8 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • In earlier versions of the script the Potassium-Cyanide laser, not the Bromide-Argon laser, used frozen fuel. This is why Chris tells the laser to "stay cool" before he goes off to take Hatheway's exam. 7 of 7 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |

Rushmore (1998) Known Trivia

  • On the first day of principal photography, Wes Anderson delivered his directions to Bill Murray in a hushed whisper, so awed was he to be working with the actor. Graciously, Murray deferred publicly to Anderson, helped haul equipment and - when Disney denied a helicopter scene that would have cost $75,000 - he gave Anderson a blank check to cover the cost. 106 of 106 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • When Bill Murray first read the script, he thought it was so fantastic that he said he wanted to do it so badly he would do it for free. 118 of 119 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • Jason Schwartzman came to his audition wearing a prep-school blazer which sported a Rushmore patch he had made himself. 73 of 73 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • Bill Murray genuinely found the Keith McCawley and Ronnie McCawley who play his sons and were very much like their screen characters, annoying, and many of the scenes where he lashes out at them and insults them were improvised. 64 of 64 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • According to Bill Murray, he disliked Jason Schwartzman's personality during their first meeting. But he eventually warmed up to him while they worked together. 56 of 56 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • The Bentley used in the film was used in exchange for the owner's daughter to appear in the film. 45 of 45 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • Wes Anderson and Owen Wilson's intent with this film was to create their own "slightly heightened reality, like a Roald Dahl children's book". 40 of 40 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • Like Max Fischer, Owen Wilson was expelled from his prep school in the tenth grade. 39 of 39 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • The pictures of Ms. Cross' dead husband in her bedroom are pictures of co-writer Owen Wilson. 37 of 37 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • When Ms. Cross and Max feed the fish and talk about deaths of loved ones, Jason Schwartzman (Max) had to stand on boxes so he could be the same height as Olivia Williams (Ms. Cross). 36 of 36 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |

Goofs: Continuity: In the elevator scene at the hospital with Max and Herman, Herman lights a second cigarette while still finishing the first. In the shots that follow the old (almost finished) and new cigarette (full) switch locations and then switch back.

Rushmore (1998) Story: Max Fischer is a precocious 15-year-old whose reason for living is his attendance at Rushmore, a private school where he's not doing well in any of his classes, but where he's the king of extracurricular activities - from being in the beekeeping society to writing and producing plays, there's very little after school he doesn't do. His life begins to change, however, when he finds out he's on academic probation, and when he stumbles into love with Miss Cross, a pretty teacher of the elementary school at Rushmore. Added to the mix is his friendship with Herman Blume, wealthy industrialist and father to boys who attend the school, and who also finds himself attracted to Miss Cross. Max's fate becomes inextricably tied to this odd love triangle, and how he sets about resolving it is the story in the film. Written byGary Dickerson <slug@mail. utexas.edu>
