The Ghost Writer (2010) Known Trivia

  • The end title designer forgot to use punctuation when writing the end credits. This resulted in all assistants being listed as, e.g. "ass designer" or "ass painter". 50 of 51 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • Ewan McGregor has said that the script never named his character, so in his head, his character name was Gordon McFarquor. The credits simply list him as The Ghost. (The character is never named in the original novel.) 29 of 29 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • Some part of the movie was filmed on the German island of Sylt as a stand in for Martha's Vineyard. To look more American it was dressed up with an attention to details: American style cars, US signage, added telephone poles (phone and energy lines run mostly underground in Germany), wooden houses, American extras, etc. 21 of 21 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • Writer Robert Harris is a former BBC TV reporter and political columnist who actively supported Tony Blair until the Iraq War, which Harris felt was a mistake. Blair resigned June 26, 2007, spurring Harris to drop his other work to write The Ghost, which was published Sept. 26. Similarities between Blair and Adam Lang, Cherie Blair and Ruth Lang, Hatherton and Halliburton, etc., are clearly intentional. Mo Asumang appears briefly as a Condoleezza Rice look-a-like Secretary of State in a photo op with Lang. 18 of 18 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • When Roman Polanski was arrested September 2009 in Switzerland, post-production was never put on hold. He saw every step of the film and made all artistic decisions. He finished editing the movie while in a Swiss prison. In December 2009 Polanski was released on bail but placed under house arrest, where he remained when this movie was released. 22 of 23 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • The Ghost is given a manuscript by Lang's attorney. In the taxi he checks the number of pages: 624. Tony Blair's memoirs 'A Journey', published in September 2010, also has 624 pages. 22 of 23 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • Largely because Roman Polanski could not set foot in the United States, filming took place in Germany made to look like Massachusetts. 14 of 14 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • Was originally filmed as a R rated thriller but upon its purchase for US distribution, it was needed to be cut down to PG-13 to ensure a wider audience. This was done by cutting out 18 F-words, 3 C-words, and also some more graphic sexual dialog as well as trimming some CGI blood spray during a death scene. 12 of 12 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • Lang's beach house set was built entirely in a studio. The Cape Cod views through the windows were the result of green screens. 10 of 10 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • The NHL hockey game that The Ghost watches (or pretends to watch) on the TV in the hotel bar is between the Vancouver Canucks and St. Louis Blues on January 23, 2008. The voice of announcer Jim Hughson can clearly be heard on the CBC broadcast, naming such Canuck players as Markus Nslund, Mattias hlund, Henrik Sedin and Daniel Sedin. 7 of 7 found this interesting Interesting? Goofs: Errors in geography: When The Ghost is in his hotel room, the telephone rings and it is a UK brrring-brrring (double) ring instead of a long single ring.

The Ghost Writer (2010) Story: An unremarkable ghost-writer has landed a lucrative contract to redact the memoirs of Adam Lang, the former UK Prime Minister. After dominating British politics for years, Lang has retired with his wife to the USA. He lives on an island, in luxurious, isolated premises complete with a security detail and a secretarial staff. Soon, Adam Lang gets embroiled in a major scandal with international ramifications that reveals how far he was ready to go in order to nurture UK's "special relationship" with the USA. But before this controversy has started, before even he has closed the deal with the publisher, the ghost-writer gets unmistakable signs that the turgid draft he is tasked to put into shape inexplicably constitutes highly sensitive material. I Spit on Your Grave (2010) Known Trivia

  • It took Sarah Butler a week before she could bring herself to commit to making the film. 26 of 26 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • In the final shooting script, Jennifer was intended to arrive at the cabin with her dog and it was to be featured heavily during the introduction of the film. The dog was written out of the script last minute because hiring a trained dog for the intended shooting schedule would put the movie over budget. According to the director Steven R. Monroe, "The dog would have made more money than anybody on the movie." 24 of 24 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • At the beginning of the film, Jennifer buys $19.78 worth of gas. 1978 is the year the original film I Spit on Your Grave (1978) was released. 43 of 45 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • While the location in which the film takes place is never identified, Louisiana inspection stickers can be seen on the vehicles. 15 of 15 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • According to director Steven R. Monroe, the studio submitted an uncut version of the film to the MPAA to see if by chance they would get an R rating. The MPAA came back and said "look, you've got an NC-17 movie, but we don't recommend that you cut it down because we feel like it's really impactful." They then decided against editing the film and released it as Unrated so it could play in more theaters. 30 of 33 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • Sarah Butler had reservations about taking the role, as she herself chooses not to watch horror movies because she finds them disturbing. Her agent eventually talked her into it, stating that Sarah would be insane not to play someone so "scary and bad ass". 22 of 24 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • Although rape is one of the main plot points in the film's theme, the word is only used twice by two characters, at the very last scene of the movie. 11 of 11 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • After casting was completed, the actors had only two weeks to prepare and rehearse for the shoot. 9 of 9 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • Chad Lindberg was originally supposed to play Stanley but opted to play Matthew instead. 8 of 8 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • According to Jeff Branson, a total of 7 edits were submitted to the MPAA in order to obtain a Restricted (R) rating. Fearing that the drastic cuts necessary to release with an R-rating would dilute the intended impact of the film, the producers decided to release the original cut theatrically without an MPAA rating. 7 of 7 found this interesting Interesting? Dial M for Murder (1954) Known Trivia

  • During the attack scene according to the script, Grace Kelly was to get out of bed, put her robe on, and answer the phone when it rang. Grace Kelly contended that no woman, being at home, would put a robe on to answer the phone. Alfred Hitchcock agreed, and so the scene was shot with her in her nightgown. 55 of 55 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • Warner Brothers insisted on shooting the movie in 3-D although the craze was fading and Alfred Hitchcock was sure the movie would be released flat. The director wanted the first shot to be that of a close-up of a finger dialing the letter M on a rotary phone, but the 3-D camera would not be able to focus such a close-up correctly. Hitchcock ordered a giant finger made from wood with a proportionally large dial built in order to achieve the effect. 44 of 44 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • Alfred Hitchcock arranged to have Grace Kelly dressed in bright colors at the start of the film and made them progressively darker as time goes on. 52 of 53 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |

The actress balked and said that no woman would put a robe on to answer the phone when she was sleeping alone but would answer it in her slip. The director agreed to allow the actress to make all costume decisions for herself in their subsequent films together. 22 of 22 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |

Sunset Blvd. (1950) Known Trivia

  • Upon seeing the film at a star-studded preview screening at Paramount, MGM studio head Louis B. Mayer screamed at director Billy Wilder that he should be tarred, feathered and horse-whipped for bringing his profession into such disrepute. Wilder's response was a terse, "Fuck you." 103 of 104 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • In "On Sunset Boulevard: The Life and Times of Billy Wilder", Ed Sikov relates a story about Wilder's explanation of the true meaning of the strange dead chimp scene from the start of the film. Sikov says that during the mid-1990s, both Wilder and former First Lady Nancy Reagan Reagan were at a party for an opening of one of the productions of the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical based on the film, when, with Reagan nearby, an older woman approached Wilder with a question about what the chimp scene meant. Wilder's typically outrageous answer, probably intended to shock the former First Lady as much as to inform the woman of the true meaning of the scene, was, "Don't you understand? Before Joe Gillis came along, Norma Desmond was fucking the monkey." 87 of 88 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • The "Desmond mansion" was located not on Sunset Blvd, but at 3810 Wilshire on the corner of Crenshaw and Irving Blvd. It was built in 1924 by William Jenkins, at a cost of $250,000. Its second owner was Jean Paul Getty, who purchased it for his second wife. Mrs. Getty divorced her millionaire husband and received custody of the house; it was she who rented it to Paramount for the filming. The only addition was the swimming pool which wasn't equipped with means of circulating the water so was useless after filming. The pool was used in its empty condition in the film Rebel Without a Cause in 1955. The mansion was torn down in 1957, and a large office building for Getty Oil built on the site and still stands on the spot. 48 of 48 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • When Norma Desmond says to the guard at the Paramount Studio gates 'Without me there wouldn't be any Paramount Studio' the words could apply to Gloria Swanson as she was their top star 6 years running. 39 of 39 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • The photos of the young Norma Desmond that decorate the house are all genuine publicity photos from Gloria Swanson's heyday. 38 of 38 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • The name Norma Desmond was chosen from a combination of silent-film star Norma Talmadge and silent movie director William Desmond Taylor, whose still-unsolved murder is one of the great scandals of Hollywood history. (On the morning of Febriary 1, 1922, Taylor was shot and killed in his Hollywood bungalow. His killer was never identified.) 37 of 37 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • As a practical joke, during the scene where William Holden and Nancy Olson kiss for the first time, Billy Wilder let them carry on for minutes without yelling cut (he'd already gotten the shot he needed on the first take). Eventually it wasn't Wilder who shouted "Cut!" but Holden's wife, Ardis (actress Brenda Marshall), who happened to be onset that day. 36 of 36 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • Montgomery Clift quit the production because he was, like the character of Joe, having an affair with a wealthy middle-aged former actress, Libby Holman, and he was scared the press would start prying into his background. 34 of 34 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • The movie's line "All right, Mr. DeMille, I'm ready for my close-up" was voted as the #7 movie quote by the American Film Institute. (It is also one of the most frequently misquoted movie lines, usually given as, "I'm ready for my close-up, Mr. DeMille.") "I am big! It's the pictures that got small." was voted #24, out of 100. 34 of 34 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • When crew members asked Billy Wilder how he was going to shoot the burial of Norma's monkey, one of the film's most bizarre scenes, he just said, "You know, the usual monkey-funeral sequence." 40 of 41 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
