Full Metal Jacket (1987) Known Trivia

  • The videotape demonstration was not the only factor which got R. Lee Ermey the role as the drill instructor. Ermey went to Stanley Kubrick and asked for the part, as the actors on the set were, in his opinion, not up to snuff. When Kubrick declined, Ermey barked an order for Kubrick to stand up when he was spoken to, and the director instinctively obeyed. That sealed the matter, and Ermey won the part as Gunnery Sgt. Hartmann. 303 of 305 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • One of the scenes cut from the movie was a scene that showed a group of Marines playing soccer. The scene was cut because a shot revealed they were not using a soccer ball, but a human head. 229 of 230 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • His shirt on Parris Island reveals that Pvt. Joker's real name is J.T. Davis. This is a deliberate reference to Spec. James T. Davis, the first officially recognized U.S. casualty in Vietnam, who was killed in 1961. 115 of 115 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • Stanley Kubrick had nothing but praise for R. Lee Ermey's skills as a performer. Kubrick originally was going to write dialogue for Ermey's character himself, but he became so impressed with what Ermey improvised, that he decided it wasn't necessary. He just let him ad-lib, something practically unheard of for a Stanley Kubrick film. Ermey's performances were so faultless that Kubrick only needed 2-3 takes to get his scenes filmed, also extremely rare for a Kubrick film. The only instance Ermey had to film more than 2-3 takes was in the Jelly Doughnut Scene - which he claims was filmed in 37 takes, to the point his voice kept disappearing from time to time. 254 of 257 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • In the first part of the movie, in the sequences inside the barracks during the drill, a special lens was designed to keep every single soldier in focus. Stanley Kubrick intended that no one was special and they all had the same treatment. 130 of 131 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • It is a common misconception that much, if not all, of R. Lee Ermey's dialogue during the Parris Island sequence was improvised. In several interviews Ermey himself has stated that he worked closely with Kubrick to help mold the script so that it was more believable, all while retaining certain dialogue crucial to Kubrick's vision. While filming the opening scene, where he disciplines Pvt. Cowboy, he says Cowboy is the type of guy who would have sex with another guy "and not even have the goddamned common courtesy to give him a reach-around". Stanley Kubrick immediately yelled cut and went over to Ermey and asked, "What the hell is a reach-around?" Ermey politely explained what it meant. Kubrick laughed and re-shot the scene, telling Ermey to keep the line. 190 of 193 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • During filming, a family of rabbits were accidentally killed. Stanley Kubrick, an animal lover, was so upset that he canceled the rest of the day's work. 202 of 206 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • To make Gunnery Sgt. Hartmann's performance and the recruits' reactions as convincing as possible, Matthew Modine, Vincent D'Onofrio, and the other actors playing recruits never met R. Lee Ermey prior to filming. Stanley Kubrick also saw to it that Ermey didn't fraternize with the actors between takes. 101 of 102 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • The inscription "I Am Become Death" is written on Animal Mother's helmet. This is a quotation from the Bhagavad-Gita, spoken by J. Robert Oppenheimer after the explosion of the first atomic bomb at Alamogordo. 65 of 65 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • R. Lee Ermey actually slapped Vincent D'Onofrio in the scene where he knocks his hat off. It was D'Onofrio's idea. Unfortunately for him, he forgot about Stanley Kubrick's perfectionism. He had to endure take after take of real slaps. Ermey (being a muscular former Marine) tried not give any damage to D'Onofrio. But his first mild slaps drove him to slap more violently. 115 of 117 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |

The Deer Hunter (1978) Known Trivia

  • Director Michael Cimino convinced Christopher Walken to spit in Michael's face. When Walken actually did it, Robert De Niro was completely shocked, as evidenced by his reaction. In fact, De Niro was so furious about it he nearly left the set. Cimino later said of Walken, "He's got courage!" 128 of 128 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • During some of the Russian Roulette scenes, a live round was put into the gun to heighten the actors' tension. This was Robert De Niro's suggestion. It was checked, however, to make sure the bullet was not in the chamber before the trigger was pulled. 148 of 150 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • The studio wanted to replace John Cazale when he was ruled un-insurable. Robert De Niro put up the money for the insurance. Cazale died shortly after filming was completed. 67 of 67 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • The slapping in the Russian roulette sequences was 100% authentic. The actors grew very agitated by the constant slapping, which, naturally, added to the realism of the scenes. 98 of 99 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • The scene where Savage is yelling, "Michael, there's rats in here, Michael" as he is stuck in the river is actually Savage yelling at the director Michael Cimino because of his fear of rats which were infesting the river area. He was yelling for the director to pull him out of the water because of the rats... it looked real and they kept it in. 116 of 118 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • The deaths of approximately twenty-eight people who died playing Russian roulette were reported as having been influenced by scenes in the movie. 57 of 57 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • Robert De Niro recently explained that the scene where Michael visits Steve in the hospital for the first time was the most emotional scene that he was ever involved with. He broke down in tears while discussing the scene in AFI Life Achievement Award: A Tribute to Robert De Niro (2003). 79 of 80 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • John Cazale was very weak when filming began, and for this reason, his scenes were filmed first. Michael Cimino knew from the start that Cazale was dying from cancer, but the studio did not. When they found out, they wanted to replace Cazale. When Meryl Streep learned of their intentions, she threatened to quit if they did. Cazale died shortly after filming was completed. 91 of 93 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • Robert De Niro, who prepared for his role by socializing with actual steelworkers, was introduced by his hosts and new friends as Bob, and no one recognized him. 46 of 46 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • Christopher Walken achieved the withdrawn, hollow look of his character by eating nothing but rice and bananas. 65 of 66 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
