Galaxy Quest (1999) Known Trivia

  • Sam Rockwell based his portrayal on Bill Paxton's performance in Aliens (1986). In particular, his hysterical fear of being killed, and his mental breakdown upon seeing a motion detector that shows their enemy closing in on them. 59 of 59 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • The scene when Tim Allen is in a mens room overhearing how the cast of Galaxy Quest are nobodies and all the co-stars can't stand him mirrors an actual event in William Shatner's life. He discovered the exact same things about himself when he attended a Star Trek (1966) convention. 130 of 133 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • Director Dean Parisot and star Tim Allen have revealed in interviews that the original tone of the film was much darker, with more scenes of violence. After test screenings the film was re-cut to emphasize the comedy and obtain a PG rating. 48 of 48 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • This film was one of the earliest to have its own internet domain and website, GalaxyQuest.com (now available only via Wayback archive). However, instead of being a polished part of the film's marketing campaign, the site (in keeping with the film's fandom theme) was deliberately designed to look like a fan page, with screen captures and poor HTML coding. 48 of 48 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • In theaters, the film was presented at 1.85:1 for the first 20 minutes. When Tim Allen first realizes he's on a real spaceship and the vista of Thermia is revealed, the screen image widened to 2.35:1 as the parting walls of the spaceship revealed the vista. 66 of 67 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • Alexander Dane never takes off his headpiece throughout the entire movie. Even when he and Gwen DeMarco are talking to each other by home phone, Dane still has his headpiece on, even when not in costume. 58 of 59 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • Just after the crew arrives via the 'pods' and the Thermaians appear without their appearance generators; when the captain asks "who wants a tour?" at least Sigourney Weaver did not know that 'Guy' was going to scream in terror as he did. You can see a very real reaction from her at that moment. 56 of 57 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • Justin Long's film debut. 52 of 53 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • At the beginning of the film, Tommy's "You are so full of shit, man!" line was re-dubbed to "You are so full of it, man!" When faced with going through "the chompers", Gwen's "Well, fuck that!" was re-dubbed to say "Well, screw that!". These edits were to avoid a PG-13 rating. The original lines are still obvious when reading their lips. 51 of 52 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • The Thermians use appearance generators to assume human form, while their true form is that of massive alien beings with several tentacles. This concept was possibly taken from the Star Trek (1966) episode Star Trek: By Any Other Name (1968), where in that episode, the Kelvans are aliens who assume human form, but their true form (which is never shown, but described by Spock to Capt. Kirk) is that of "massive creatures with hundreds of tentacles". 34 of 34 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |

Goofs: Continuity: When Alexander is being introduced, he bows with his hand flat against his chest. When he comes up, his hand is in a fist.

Tag Galaxy Quest (1999):

Galaxy Quest (1999) Story: The sci-fi television series "Galaxy Quest", which took place aboard the intergalactic spaceship NSEA Protector, starred Jason Nesmith as suave Commander Peter Quincy Taggert, Gwen DeMarco as sexy communications person Lt. Tawny Madison (a role which consisted solely of repeating what the computer stated, much to Gwen's annoyance), Shakespearean trained Sir Alexander Dane as alien Dr. Lazarus, Fred Kwan as engineer Tech Sgt. Chen, and Tommy Webber as child gunner Laredo. Eighteen years after the series last aired, it lives on in the hearts of its rabid fans. However, it lives on in infamy for its stars, who have not been able to find meaningful acting work since. Their current lives revolve around cashing in on however those roles will afford, which usually entails attending fan conventions or worse, such as shopping mall openings. Only Jason seems to relish his lot in life, until he finds out that his co-stars detest him because of his superior attitude as "the Commander", and much ... Written byHuggo

  • Peter Sellers improvised most of his lines. 184 of 184 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • George C. Scott was reputedly annoyed that Stanley Kubrick was pushing him to overact for his role. • The scene where Gen. Turgidson trips and falls in the War Room, and then gets back up and resumes talking as if nothing happened, really was an accident. Stanley Kubrick mistakenly thought that it was George C. Scott really in character, so he left it in the film. 163 of 164 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • The War Room contains a large table of food because Stanley Kubrick intended to end the film with a custard pie fight between the Russians and the Americans. He decided not to use the footage because he found it too farcical to fit with the satirical nature of the rest of the film. The only known public showing of the pie fight scene was at the 1999 screening of the film at London's National Film Theatre, following Kubrick's death. 90 of 90 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • Dr. Strangelove's glove is from Stanley Kubrick's personal collection. Peter Sellers had seen Kubrick wearing them to handle hot lights on the set, and thought they looked sinister. He wore one on his right hand (the one not under his control) to add to Strangelove's eeriness. 86 of 86 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • Stanley Kubrick wanted the tablecloth on the War Room table to be green, so the actors would feel like they were playing a game of poker over the world's fate. 85 of 85 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • Major Kong's comment about the survival kit was originally "A fella could have a pretty good weekend in Dallas with all that stuff". "Dallas" was overdubbed with "Vegas" after President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas. Kong still mouths the word "Dallas". 83 of 83 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |

Goofs: Factual errors: Gen Ripper says his entire wing of 34 B52s are on airborne alert. Only a proportion of a wing's aircraft would be on such alert. It would not be possible to keep an entire wing on such an alert.

Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964) Story: Paranoid Brigadier General Jack D. Ripper of Burpelson Air Force Base, he believing that fluoridation of the American water supply is a Soviet plot to poison the U.S. populace, is able to deploy through a back door mechanism a nuclear attack on the Soviet Union without the knowledge of his superiors, including the Chair of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Buck Turgidson, and President Merkin Muffley. Only Ripper knows the code to recall the B-52 bombers and he has shut down communication in and out of Burpelson as a measure to protect this attack. Ripper's executive officer, RAF Group Captain Lionel Mandrake (on exchange from Britain), who is being held at Burpelson by Ripper, believes he knows the recall codes if he can only get a message to the outside world. Meanwhile at the Pentagon War Room, key persons including Muffley, Turgidson and nuclear scientist and adviser, a former Nazi named Dr. Strangelove, are discussing measures to stop the attack or mitigate its blow-up into an ...
